Cover up tattoo I completed a few days ago.

Before getting into the process of the cover up tattoo, here’s how the story initially began.  At the age of 16, Anthony wanted to get his first tattoo but since he was underage he had to take his dad with him for consent. Fast forward to present day, he wanted to cover up his first tattoo with a memorial piece in honor of his father, who recently passed away. This time around, he decided to go big and it all fell in perfect alignment with the old adage, “The bigger you go, the easier the coverup will be”.

After making the trip out to Vegas from Philadelphia, he decided to create a tribute piece to his father that was going to be unique and heart felt. The time on the clock was set to 8:04, which was the exact time his dad passed away, and the dove represents his father’s funeral and his entry and rebirth into heaven.

This frequently requested tattoo imagery has been done over and over by so many tattoo artists so it’s always tough to make it just a bit different. As for the coverup, I used a rose as if it was part of the clock’s design and instead of the white highlights, I used grey ink, separating it from the other rose and dove. This made for an easier coverup since the darker color would still show through white ink. One way to put it, as I searched on Instagram is that it’s a “black and grey and gray” tattoo.

Thanks again to Anthony for taking the trip down to Vegas and it was honor to work on you. If you’re interested in viewing more of my work please click here for my gallery.

TATTOO DESIGNS: LAS VEGAS

If you’re looking for tattoo designs, then there’s thousands of ideas and referrences that can be found all throughout the web. From animals, religious, black and grey to color, the list of tattoo designs can be broken down into 100’s of categories.

las-vegas-tattoos-1

Hand lettering or “script” tattoos are also a popular category. Tattoo by Vandal.

One of the most searched categories has to realistic portraits, and Greek or Roman themed tatts, and both are typically inspired by images of your choice. But when looking for a color or bng artist that specializes in the aforementioned, you’re going to want to look at the details of the artists work. From the smoothness of the artists shading, to the accuracy of their work, these are just a few of  the elements you’ll want to look for.

Cover up tattoos are another big category and here’s an example of a work in progress by artist Andy Pho

So take a look around and you’ll see that every artist has a different way of interpreting your favorite image. Some do cartoon looking depictions while others nail the proportions and characteristics to the wrinkle. You also want to see how the tattooist is able to merge and integrate tattoos. It’s an important part of the tattoo process – especially if you want to end up with a sleeve – so be sure to do your homework.

A great example of a photo realism, gangster inspired tattoo by Robert Pho

In addition, take a look at the placement of the tattoo you want. Placement affects the way a tattoo will look and the wrong placement will distort and possibly disfigure the image. Then again, a qualified tattoo artist will be help and guide you so be sure to know what you want and see what they have to say.

DETAILS.

The tattoo shown here features the level of attention that resident artist Andy Pho puts into each of his pieces. On the left is a full view of the military tattoo and to the right is a close up view.

What makes a good tattoo? Well there’s plenty of factors to consider including color saturation, shading,  realism and the artists ability to keep the proportions and perspectives of the subject being inked. But at the end of the day beauty is within the eye of the beholder, and your budget will also be a major consideration.

At first glance, this piece brings a great level of realism and that’s because of the details. From his ability to make the rotors appear as if they’re in motion, to the shading which makes the copter appear as if it was creating dust bowls, it’s the details that draw it all together and make one collective piece.

ULTRA REALISTIC TATTOOS BY SDT.

When it comes to tattoo realism, there are many factors to consider when choosing an artist. You have to look into their ability to keep proportions when working with contours – because there’s no part of your body that’s flat like paper. In addition, you have to look at their attention to detail, their gradient shading as well as the finesse of their fades. A good tattoo exudes all of these factors and in addition, you have to make sure that you work with an artist that best suits your style as well as your budget.

Of course, cheap tattoos aren’t good and good tattoos aren’t cheap, so be prepared to accept that you get what you pay for. In Las Vegas, there are a handful of great and talented artists, but when it comes to the largest assembly of the most highly noted, and globally acclaimed artists (under one roof) then look no further than Skin Design Tattoo.

Located just a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip, and a stones throw away from the Palms and Rio, Skin Design is home to the most sought after artists in the game so be sure to stop on by or view each artists online gallery and portfolios.

COVER UP TATTOO SPECIALIST: ANDY PHO

“A good tattoo aint cheap, and a cheap tattoo ain’t good.”

We’ve all heard those infamous words time and time again, yet every second there’s someone out there who learns the hard way. It’s a slogan that that can be applied to just about every industry and this here is a prime example of what a scratcher will give ya.

W-cover-up-tattoo-las-vegas-pho

Pictured here is the tattoo of a client name Robert and here’s how the story goes. Robert asked around if anyone knew someone who could tattoo and his one friend had mentioned that he “knew a guy”. Needless to say, “that guy” tattooed Robert out of his house for a “good deal”, and after sitting down with him and showing him reference photos, the guy began to freehand the piece and 5 hours later Rob “freaked out” and left.

A little under a week later, Robert stopped by our shop for a free consultation with resident artist Andy Pho. After examining the tattoo and seeing his reference photos, Andy had suggested that he get some laser tattoo removal done to lighten up the piece, but the client declined saying, “[He] wanted it covered it asap.”

That said, Andy booked him for the next available opening and got to work. For starters, Andy wanted to cover up the tattoo with a larger piece and he began by drawing the basic shapes of the new armor. Once he outlined the basic shaped, he followed up by doing in and putting in all the details of the armored shield.

Though far from done, the results thus far are pretty incredible and it’s definitely a great example of what can be achieved if you do a cover up tattoo with an artist who has the creative vision and artistic prowess to get your goals done.

W-Cover-Up-tattoos-las-vegas
More will be added to this piece but this is a progress shot of what’s been done so far. Again, if you’re looking for a cover up tattoo, then be sure to get an artist with experience doing cover them. You must also make sure to view a portfolio of their past work because if they don’t have pictures of actual examples to show you then take a walk because the proof is in the pudding.

On that note, ghappy hunting for a tattoo artist that’ll best suit your style and budget, and please remember to catch a budget and break bread because once again, “Good tattoos ain’t cheap and cheap tattoos aren’t good.”

We’ll have updates and more pics as it develops.

ABOUT ANDY PHO:
Artists shouldn’t be gauged by the length of time they’ve been practiced. Instead, they should be gauged by how much they’ve progressed. Thus is the case with Andy Pho, with only four years under his belt, Andy has developed a skill set which rivals those decades into the game. In turn he has also created a portfolio of art and tattoos which has amassed him a comprehensive local following of tattoo collectors from Las Vegas – as well as all throughout North America.

Trained by Robert Pho, Andy moved to Las Vegas after completing formal art school training back in NY. It was there he  practiced a multidisciplinary curriculum which included sculpting, painting, and drawing in both charcoal and pencil mediums. In his younger years, he found himself constantly drawing – while struggling with dead end jobs – and that’s when his passion would finally come to fruition.  After a few years, he decided to formulate a way to make art into his livelihood and that’s when his brother, Robert, said, “If you move out here, I’ll train you.” Needless to say, it was a few weeks later and Andy was packed and ready to relocate to Las Vegas, NV, and the rest is history in the making.

While he likes to specialize in the weird and quirky, Andy has quickly established himself as a tattoo artist known for his animal portraits. His attention to detail in each of his pieces has created tattoos which are life-like and compelling.  While he’s no stranger to any medium (whether it be black and gray tattoos or color pieces) he does admit that it’s the aforementioned “weird and quirky” pieces that stimulate his brain.

When asked about what he loves most about tattoos, his response was an unwavering truth, “I love tattoos because it’s a patience process. You simply can’t get it all in one shot and in the end, the client has to sacrifice comfort to get the ultimate pleasure. In short, there is no other art that is as personal or permanent.” He further adds, “When it comes to art, it’s one thing to have someone trust  you with their walls to hang art, but it’s a whole other responsibility and honor to have them trust you with their skin.”

COVER UP TATTOOS

cover-up-tattoo

Covering up an old or unwanted tattoo can be tricky. Depending on the size of the tattoo, as well as the colors involved, the process is one which needs to examined by a professional. It also depends on what you want to do. Do you want to go from a color tattoo to a black and grey piece? Or do you want to cover up an intricate design? All these factors determine the ease (and the price of a cover up), and you also want to make sure the artist has experience doing cover ups. If they say they can do it, but don’t have any samples to show you then it’s up to you to take the gamble.

cover-up-tattoo-skull

Las Vegas tattoo artist, Andy Pho, happens to be a cover up specialist and he’s been doing so for years. Here’s a few examples of his work and remember…it’s a tedious process which needs to treated as such. Sometimes they may even suggest using laser tattoo removal to lighten the colors, so it’s in your best interest to seek professional consultation.

Free consultations are available at Skin Design so please feel free to drop us a line to set up an appointment or drop on by.
