Golden State Tattoo Expo 2016: 2nd Place Best Sleeve category.

Congrats to our bossman and Monte for taking home 2nd place for Best Sleeve at the Golden State Expo. The even went down in Pasadena, CA this past weekend and as we get to packing, to head back home, we’d like to thank everyone who stopped on by the booth. The event had a great turn out (and we’re exhausted) but it was well worth the trip. We’ll definitely be participating at the next Golden State Expo and we’d like to thank everyone who stopped on by.

Of course, all this wouldn’t haven’t been possible if Monte didn’t show up for all his sessions – as well as this show – so a big up to Monte for his constant dedication. He’s been at this for a while and we can’t thank him enough. In the end, the awards are cool and all but regardless if you take one home, our art would never have a platform to showcase on if we didn’t have loyal customers like Monte, so thanks again to all of you who trust us with your skin. It’s truly an honor.

RELIGIOUS TATTOOS BY ROBERT PHO.

religous-tattoo-vegas

The finest tattoos in Vegas.

The improvement and progress of any tattoo artist is based on the acceleration of his skill, not the years he has spent in the game. But if you’re into counting years, then Las Vegas tattoo artist Robert Pho, has over 25 years of practice tucked under his belt. In addition to countless features and interviews, Robert has amassed an incredible portfolio of work that has won the industry over. Needless to say, the evolution of his skill, his work and his dedication to tattoo culture is unreal and it all becomes evident in the delivery of his work and final product.

The latest religious piece you see here is actually a cover up, and it’s still in progress so we’ll keep you posted on any new updates. If your’e looking to see more of Robert’s work then you can visit his gallery by clicking here.

FOO DOG TATTOO: IMPERIAL LION

asian-tattoo-robert-pho-vegas

There’s a reason why so many have referred to artist Robert Pho as a master tattooist.

Asian style tattoos have long been a staple in the world of tattoo. Regardless if the work is done in black and grey or color, it’s not necessarily the medium which dictates it’s impact, but the style. Asian art in itself is unique because of the ritualistic images and mediums found in the art. There’s a rich cultural heritage behind the imagery, and it comes as no surprise that this timeless style has impacted the lives of many.

The tattoo above was done by Robert Pho and his work speaks for itself. The central focus of the tattoo is the Chinese guardian lion, which is often referred to as an Imperial Guardian Lions or in Western culture as a “Foo Dog”. The lion has become common sight and the lion is said to safeguard the health and wealth of those who own or wear one.

They were traditionally found in front of Imperial palaces, Imperial tombs, government offices, temples, and the homes of government officials and the wealthy, from the Han Dynasty (206 BC-AD 220), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits. They are also used in other artistic contexts, for example on door-knockers, and in pottery. Pairs of guardian lion statues are still common decorative and symbolic elements at the entrances to restaurants, hotels, supermarkets and other structures, with one sitting on each side of the entrance.

TATTOO DESIGNS: LAS VEGAS

If you’re looking for tattoo designs, then there’s thousands of ideas and referrences that can be found all throughout the web. From animals, religious, black and grey to color, the list of tattoo designs can be broken down into 100’s of categories.

Hand lettering or “script” tattoos are also a popular category. Tattoo by Vandal.

One of the most searched categories has to realistic portraits, and Greek or Roman themed tatts, and both are typically inspired by images of your choice. But when looking for a color or bng artist that specializes in the aforementioned, you’re going to want to look at the details of the artists work. From the smoothness of the artists shading, to the accuracy of their work, these are just a few of  the elements you’ll want to look for.

Cover up tattoos are another big category and here’s an example of a work in progress by artist Andy Pho

So take a look around and you’ll see that every artist has a different way of interpreting your favorite image. Some do cartoon looking depictions while others nail the proportions and characteristics to the wrinkle. You also want to see how the tattooist is able to merge and integrate tattoos. It’s an important part of the tattoo process – especially if you want to end up with a sleeve – so be sure to do your homework.

In addition, take a look at the placement of the tattoo you want. Placement affects the way a tattoo will look and the wrong placement will distort and possibly disfigure the image. Then again, a qualified tattoo artist will be help and guide you so be sure to know what you want and see what they have to say.

ULTRA REALISTIC TATTOOS BY SDT.

When it comes to tattoo realism, there are many factors to consider when choosing an artist. You have to look into their ability to keep proportions when working with contours – because there’s no part of your body that’s flat like paper. In addition, you have to look at their attention to detail, their gradient shading as well as the finesse of their fades. A good tattoo exudes all of these factors and in addition, you have to make sure that you work with an artist that best suits your style as well as your budget.

Of course, cheap tattoos aren’t good and good tattoos aren’t cheap, so be prepared to accept that you get what you pay for. In Las Vegas, there are a handful of great and talented artists, but when it comes to the largest assembly of the most highly noted, and globally acclaimed artists (under one roof) then look no further than Skin Design Tattoo.

Located just a few miles from the Las Vegas Strip, and a stones throw away from the Palms and Rio, Skin Design is home to the most sought after artists in the game so be sure to stop on by or view each artists online gallery and portfolios.

HORROR: CLOWN TATTOO.

clown-tattoos

Here’s a progress shot of a clown themed tattoo being done on Monte by Robert Pho.

Ever want a clown tattoo? I know I do. As little children, clowns brought us joy and memories of the circus and cotton candy, but those sweet memories slowly transcended into ones more associated with hamburgers and Happy Meals – thanks to Ronald McDonald. Then as we enter adulthood, something strange happens, and clowns become an entity that strikes fear in our minds and terrifies us beyond belief.

it2

Who knows? Maybe it has something to do with being old enough to watch horror movies that triggers and introduces this fear. I remember growing up watching Magic with Anthony Hopkins, and there was something frightening and eerie about that mannequin…..but it was nothing, compared to that f*ckin clown in IT from Stephen King.

Again, I can’t pinpoint the actual cause, but maybe it has to do with the fact that behind the mask and suit is a person with evil intentions.  Regardless, my fear of them has slowly evolved into an obsession with them. They’re powerful, mysterious, incredibly freakish and you yet there’s something intriguing and ironic about something so evil always smiling and never breaking character.

Right? When have you ever seen a clown not happy?

clown-tattoo-vegas-pho

That said, this clown themed tattoo done by Robert Pho is an incredible piece that’ll have you mesmerized and we’ll have more pictures of this clown sleeve shortly. It’s still a work in progress and we’ll have the final pictures, as well as the full story behind this theme shortly. On another note, if you’ve ever seen the gangster themed leg sleeve that we previously featured, well he’s the same owner of this sleeve so you already know that this is going to be one hell of a body suit once it’s all buttoned up.

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU SPEND ON A KIDS BED?

Processed with VSCOcam with t1 preset

It’s not everyday you see a luxury mattress sitting in a body shop. Then again, it’s not everyday you find someone willing to cut up a brand new car just to make their son a bed.

When we saw a Vi-Spring mattress box sitting at a friends auto body shop we couldn’t help but wonder what the hell was going on. Now if you’re familiar with these luxury mattresses from London, then you already know that they’ve been around since 1901 – and are literally the creme de la creme of  handmade beds.  With mattresses topping off at $70,000 (and you could spend more if you go full custom), these beds are not for the financially challenged.

So when we found out about the details for this custom build, our curiosity peaked and a conversation ensued. A few hours later we were going over ideas and plans, and it turned out they needed an artist to add the final touches so now we’re proud to say that SDT will be taking part in this epic build.

Needless to say, the details about this custom bed are still under wraps but we’ll have updates and pictures as soon as everything falls into place.
