Recent reports have indicated that close to 25% of the U.S. population has some sort of tattoo and that a little more than 50 percent would like some (or all of it) removed. If you’re one of the 50 percent then this article may be of interest to you.

At Skin Design we use the latest version of the Q-Switch laser, which became commercially available back in the 1990’s. It’s currently the most effective treatment to remove unwanted ink and while we could explain it in depth it’s much easier to watch this video here.

This video provides a good breakdown of how laser tattoo removal works. It’s a good segment which showcases the mechanical and biological aspect of how they are removed from the body.

What should you expect during a Laser Tattoo Removal session?

Here’s what you can expect…

  • Smaller tattoos will require fewer pulses while larger ones require more. In either case, the tattoo requires several treatments and multiple visits. At each treatment, the tattoo should become progressively lighter.
  • You will be asked to wear protective eye goggles .
  • The pulses of the laser on the skin will feel different on each patient. The feelings have been described as a splash of  grease from a frying pan or the snapping of a rubber band on the skin.

Is the pain of laser tattoo removal unbearable?
Unlike tattoos, we have never had a patient require anesthesia, and we have never had a patient “tap out” or stop the procedure because they couldn’t handle the pain. We’ve seen tiny little women handle the pain better than bigger guys but in the end it’s all about your own pain tolerance.

Anyone who would like to get an unwanted tattoo removed will benefit. The emotional scarring of an unwanted tattoo is horrendous. So what will it take? Well, the removal of a tattoo all depends on many factors which includes: the color of the ink, the type of ink used, the age of the tattoo as well as the patients skin type. The best way to find out exactly how you’re skin will react is to come in to consult a professional.

Laser tattoo removal offers very little risk of scarring and it’s the safest method of ink removal when compared to others. Methods like excision, dermabrasion or salabrasion have been mentioned to work but with very ineffective and lengthy results.

Tattoos are a form of artistic self-expression but there comes a time when opinions and factors change what we want to show. Whether it’s a break up, an old or faded tattoo, or something as simple as a tattoo, which expressed former values – which has since changed – we can help.

Here are some factors which will determine how fast and effective your treatments will be:

  • The color of the ink
    • Different colored inks react differently to laser removal. The easiest colors to remove are black and grey, but certain colors may need more sessions.
  • The type of ink used
    • Professional tattoos are much easer to remove than amateur tattoos and tattoos received in prison. The difference is in the ink used and we understand all ink types
  • The size of the tattoo you want to remove
    • The size of the tattoo will also determine how many sessions will be required. Obviously pain tolerance plays a key factor in the removal of tattoos.
  • Age of the tattoo
    • Older tattoos can sometimes be stubborn and much difficult to remove. This is where our certified experts can examine your skin as well as the age of the tattoo.
  • Skin type
    • Skin types definitely play an integral part in the removal process. Some skin may blister, whereas other types will heal faster. We can also examine this in person.
  • Location
    • Location of the tattoo also plays a key role in how long it will take to remove a tattoo as well as how long of a session a patient can endure due to pain tolerance.

Our  resident tattoo artist, Vandal, wanted to get an older tattoo removed so who better to do it then us. He wanted the forearm piece removed so prior to getting it done he talked it over with Anthony, the head of our laser tattoo removal program. After a few minutes of inspection and looking over the piece, the Quanta Q-switch was turned up, the goggles put on and the session began.

Here’s a picture of the forearm tattoo to be removed.

Keep in mind that tattoo removal requires multiple sessions. There is currently no  technology that can remove it in one session unless of course you consider cutting it out with a knife. Also, black and gray tattoos tend to be easier to remove whereas certain color work may require more sessions. We’ll be releasing a full story about which colors are easier to remove so stay tuned.

Is it painless? No. Laser Tattoo removal does come with some pain. So how does it work? It works by breaking down and “fracturing” the ink. Once it’s broken down, the ink particles become small enough to be removed by the body’s immune system. After each session, you will notice a “fading” of the tattoo and if you’re planning on a “cover up” with another piece of work then keep in mind that you don’t need to have it completely removed.

About our machine:

The Q-Plus Series of tattoo removal devices sets the standard by which all other devices are measured.  It is the only device on the market to offer 3 true laser wavelengths including the 694nm Ruby which is perfect for treating the difficult green and blue inks.

  • Adjustable Repetition Rate up to 10 Hz
  • Combined with a Ruby Laser @694 nm
  • Pulse Width of 30 ns
  • Energy on the skin up to 1 J/pulse
  • 510(k): Q-Plus T K073549, Q -Plus T + Ipl K123168
  • Q-Plus C is a Q-Switched Nd:YAG 532 and 1064 nm
  • Energy up to 1000 mJ/pulse @1064 nm
  • Pulse Width of 6 ns.

The Optibeam technology offered on this machine features flat topped, square spot and homogenizing optics. This helps equally distribute energy across the beam, providing more efficient laser treatment.

There are many lasers on the market but none that compare to the Q-Plus series which provides much higher performances when compared to other Q-switched lasers on the market. The machine we house at Skin Design laser tattoo removal is the Q-Plus C, also named Q-Plus T (Total), and it is the first and most powerful Q-switched laser platform which includes a Nd:Yag @ 1064 / 532 nm and a Ruby @ 694 nm: three wavelengths which efficiently target most of tattoo colours and benign pigmented lesions. *
